What a wonderful few months it’s been! We’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing all your entries in our My Grand Hero competition and it’s been lovely to celebrate all the amazing grandparents out there.
Every entry has been so heartwarming and shows us just how special grandparents are to each and every one of us. Whether they go by the name of Grandma, Grandpa, Nanny, Papa, Grampy, Granny – they’re all superheroes. This competition has really allowed us to celebrate them and recognise that their simple presence is immensely important and appreciated to their grandchildren and family.
While it’s been a lovely few months, we do of course have to announce our final winner! And what a day for it – Grandparents day! (We planned that well didn’t we!) But before we do, let’s have a little recap …
We of course had our previous winners;
Beccy Rowley, who was our July winner with her granddad Ron, who does a lot of volunteer work in his local community to keep himself busy and was also a torch bearer in the 2012 Olympics
Our August winner, Amanda Ward shared with us her Nan Betty who despite being disabled and suffering with terrible arthritis, still plays with her 27 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren and is a hero to every single on of them.
September’s Grand Hero
Our final winner is Rebecca MacBain and her hero, her grandpa, Alasdair. Here is her entry:
We love this spirit and energy to make those around him happy and smile, a special super power of a true grand hero!Rebecca went on to tell us more about her grand hero,
The charity donation goes to…
Rebecca also got to choose a charity from the list to receive the £100 donation. She chose Community Christmas, and the reason behind it is lovely,
I would like to choose community Christmas as last year I remember meeting a lady who Alasdair and his wife Marion had invited round on Christmas day. Her husband had just died and her daughter was in a coma following a car accident. She would have spent the day alone if it wasn’t for them inviting her into their home. It made a massive difference to her and I will never forget that. This charity seemed the perfect choice in light of this.

Supporting charity
We have a duty of care at Bower. Our customers are making life changing decisions regarding finances in retirement so it’s our responsibility to help and offer support to advise if equity release is the right choice. With this in mind we wanted to help support some amazing Charites that care for the older community. So we donated £100 to three charities chosen by our winners.
We’d also like to say a big thank you to all the charities involved in the competition.
