10 ways to add value to your home

new kitchen

Whether you’ve recently moved into your home or been living there for years, chances are there’s a few improvements you could carry out that will make a huge difference to the look and feel of your property.

Why not work your way through our list below and your home’s value will be sure to benefit from the time and money invested.

  1. Get curb appeal:

First impressions count, so start by taking a look at your perimeter fencing and replace and repaint as necessary, particularly before the autumnal storms start up.

  2. Frame fantastic:

While you are looking at the exterior of your home, have a check on the condition of your window frames. Replacing them entirely or simply repainting them from traditional brown to a modern white can completely transform the appearance of your house, whilst adding value.

  3. Banish drafts:

Double or even triple glazed windows will immediately add value to your home and keep pesky drafts at bay. And while they will help to keep sound out they will also keep more heat in, so you should see a saving on your utility bills too.

  4. Colour consistency:

A newly painted front door will bring a fresh feel to your home straight away. We love deep reds or navy blues. Have a garage door and gates? Painting them in the same colour or a contrasting colour to your new front door will give your property a consistent, well-maintained appearance.

  5. Your hallway:

Light coloured paint or wallpaper with a large statement mirror on the wall will give the illusion of space in the entrance to your home, and a chandelier will bring a sense of elegance. Repainting a dark staircase or hallway doors white will complement your lighter colour scheme and make the whole area feel bigger.

  6. Flooring:

You can’t go wrong with real hard wood flooring; it will undoubtedly add value to your home and will last for generations if maintained properly. For a similar look with a smaller price tag, laminate flooring will last a good 10-20 years. Where you have carpet, aim to replace every ten years. Tip: For hall, stairs and landing opt for a short-pile hard-wearing variety in a neutral tone.

  7. Update the kitchen:

If a new kitchen is out of your price range then you can achieve a new look by simply updating a few key features, such as newly painted cupboard doors and stylish new handles. Next, replace the worktop to compliment the colour scheme of your kitchen, and finish by giving the whole room a repaint to freshen up.

  8. Feature fireplace:

Every lounge needs a focal point and a stylish fireplace and surround will provide just this, as well as adding some warmth – and value – to your property.

  9. Modernise the bathroom:

If you feel your bathroom is looking a little out of date then this is a great opportunity to add value. A new white suite, chrome taps and neutral wall and floor tiles will give your bathroom a crisp, clean feel.

  10. Freshen up:

The general rule of thumb given by interior designers is to redecorate every 5 years, so if you’ve got wall-paper that’s looking a bit past its sell-by-date then consider a refresh. Neutral wallpaper or paint will enable you to bring in richer tones elsewhere, such as deep aubergine or olive coloured cushions, or a stylish ottoman or rug. Creating a feature wall using bold statement wallpaper is also a great way to achieve this.
